An outdoor activity experience, for many pupils, can provide one of the most memorable and positive experiences of their school lives. Pupils are afforded the opportunity to take part in new activities, work together, and address new challenges individually and as a team.
These activities can be enjoyed by all age groups and at all levels of skill and fitness. At Auchengillan, there are three main strands that run through all our outdoor activities.
Safety The safety of all those who come to Auchengillan is of paramount importance. All instructors are suitably qualified and experienced to ensure a high level of safety. The activities are subject to a rigorous operating procedure, with all equipment regularly maintained and updated and procedures monitored and vetted by external independent Technical Advisers
Fun As well as being positive learning experiences, outdoor activities are also great fun. Whether it be the thrill of climbing and abseiling, the satisfaction of scoring in archery, or playing games in a kayak, fun is an integral part of the programme.
Personal and social development Outdoor activities can act as an excellent catalyst for personal growth. The achievement in participating in exciting new activities, in a new environment, will often lead to improved self-confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness. There is a high level of teamwork required in all the activities. This challenges interpersonal skills, and brings out co-operation, trust, leadership and interdependence.
